One of the primary questions surrounding the rise of Chinese automotive brands is their long-term durability. While China’s early automotive exports were often characterized by low quality and short service life, the nation’s recent electric vehicle (EV) offerings have demonstrated a marked improvement in design, manufacturing, and perceived quality. Still, given the relative newness of these products in most markets, comprehensive long-term reliability data remains scarce—particularly in Western markets.
High-Mileage BYD Dolphin Proves Chinese EVs Can Go the Distance
Anecdotal evidence from regions with earlier adoption of Chinese EVs, however, offers valuable insight. Brazil has been a notable example, with BYD’s electric cars and hybrids—such as the Dolphin and Dolphin Mini (also known as the Seagull)—on sale for a little over two years. Recently, a Brazilian BYD Dolphin reached a significant milestone: more than 220,000 kilometers (approximately 135,000 miles) in just two years of service.
The vehicle in question, featured on the YouTube channel of local content creator Gilson, is a rideshare unit operated by Mr. Elio through Gilson’s company. Like other Brazil-spec Dolphins, it is equipped with a 95-horsepower front-mounted electric motor powered by a 45 kWh battery. According to NEDC testing, the model offers a range of 405 km (251 miles) on a single charge. Remarkably, the driver reports that the vehicle still achieves this maximum range despite its high mileage.
From a maintenance perspective, the vehicle’s service record has been minimal. The original brake pads and rotors remain in place, with no significant mechanical failures reported. Routine fluid changes—coolant and electric motor differential fluids—have been performed, along with a brake fluid flush at the two-year mark. Interior wear is the most visible sign of use, with the faux leather upholstery showing accumulated dirt and oils from frequent passenger use. However, the interior remains intact and functional.
Evidence Grows for BYD’s Long-Term Durability
Gilson’s channel also documents a 100,000 km (62,000 mile) BYD Dolphin Mini. That vehicle experienced a single non-mechanical issue: damage to an underbody aerodynamic shield caused by low ground clearance on rough roads. The part was replaced, and otherwise, maintenance has been limited to a cabin air filter change.
Based on his observations, Gilson estimates the high-mileage Dolphin could exceed 300,000 km (186,000 miles) without major issues. While broader, long-term reliability data for Chinese EVs is still developing, these examples suggest that at least some BYD products are capable of sustaining high-mileage operation with relatively low upkeep.
For buyers considering BYD’s competitive pricing, these early high-mileage cases indicate that the company’s products may deliver more than just affordability—they may also offer durability that meets or exceeds expectations.
